March 20th is declared by the Mayor as North Beach Citizens Day in San Francisco.

As we reflect on the success of our spring 25th Anniversary at Bimbo's 365 Club on Friday, March 20, we remember how this celebration grew into a cherished tradition. It all began in 2001 with the first North Beach Citizens fundraiser, “Francis Cooks for North Beach”- a gathering where the neighborhood came together to support neighbors in need.

At the time, North Beach resident and filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, our founder, envisioned a community where every neighborhood would care for people experiencing homelessness. He brought that vision to life by organizing a Sunday supper, cooking alongside a dedicated group of volunteers. Many local Italian women helped pick parsley and roll meatballs following his mother’s cherished recipe, all in the basement of Sts. Peter and Paul Church.

This year, the Annual Spring Benefit, La Dolce Primavera, opened with a special proclamation from Mayor Daniel Lurie, officially recognizing March 20th as North Beach Citizens Day in San Francisco.

Through innovative programs, personalized case management, and community-driven initiatives, North Beach Citizens’ continues to make a measurable impact in the lives of over 650 people each year-helping neighbors access food, secure housing, and achieve lasting stability.

“Our work is grounded in the idea that every person deserves dignity, support, and the opportunity to thrive,” said Kristie Fairchild, Executive Director. “By coming together as a community, we ensure that our neighbors can find not just immediate assistance, but lasting stability and hope.”

The iconic venue was transformed with classic pink table settings and spring tulips, while the Nick Rossi Swing Six set the tone for the evening. The event raised over $400,000 through sponsorships and the generosity of donors during the Fund-A-Need portion of the program.

CA Senator Scott Wiener also presented heartfelt remarks along with a California State Senate Resolution, recognizing North Beach Citizens for its impactful quarter century of service to San Francisco. Our local Board of Supervisors official Danny Sauter also presented the organization a signed Certificate of Recognition for our work in the North Beach community.

Today, 25 years later, the Spring Benefit has grown far beyond that first Sunday supper, becoming our signature event and the heart of the support that makes our mission possible. What began as a small neighborhood gathering has blossomed into a celebration of community, compassion, and change-bringing together donors, volunteers, and neighbors to support our unhoused and those who are experiencing housing or financial insecurity. Each year, the benefit reminds us of the power of collective action and the enduring legacy of kindness that Francis envisioned, proving that when a community comes together, real transformation is possible.
