What does it cost to leave someone homeless on the streets of San Francisco?

An estimated $60,000–$80,000 per person, per year-largely driven by emergency room visits, law enforcement, and acute crisis services rather than stable housing and prevention.

In just the past three months, North Beach Citizens has helped 14 people secure or remain in housing through our low-barrier, relationship-based case management. 

One of them is Bryan.

After years of living without stable housing, Bryan this week signed his lease and received the keys to his permanent home in North Beach. The bureaucratic systems he needed to navigate were insurmountable, but with a dedicated advocate by his side, he was able to move forward.

Our annual operating budget is approximately $1.3 million, funded by individual donors who believe in our impactful model of service. By helping people secure housing, access benefits and medical care, and prevent evictions, our work has saved taxpayers millions of dollars each year.

But that is not what drives us to show up every day to our center on Kearny Street.

We show up because compassion, when put into action, changes lives. 

We show up to build trust with our neighbors in need. To listen to what they need and encourage them to accept the care they may need. To help them navigate systems that can feel impossible to navigate alone. And ultimately, to help people move from surviving to thriving.
