Events
North Beach Citizens is a privately funded non-profit. We have several fundraising efforts throughout the year, but we rely primarily on the support we receive from individual donors, foundations, and businesses at our spring and fall events. Our spring event is a celebration of North Beach Citizens and the North Beach community. Our fall Community Recognition Awards dinner honors a member of the North Beach community who has made a difference in the lives of North Beach and San Francisco’s homeless community.

North Beach Citizens honored Denise McCarthy’s tireless dedication and personal commitment to the North Beach community: she is a founder and former board member of North Beach Citizens, and she has served as Port Commissioner to the Port of San Francisco and as Executive Director of Telegraph Hill Neighborhood Center from 1981-2006.
Community Recognition Awards Dinner 2006
In 2006, North Beach Citizens honored Angela Alioto for her work to legislate public policy geared towards uplifting our city’s homeless and low-income.
A devoted Franciscan, Angela has made it her life’s mission to champion the poor. She intuitively understands the challenges of this issue and has helped foster an environment in which organizations possessing persistence and ingenuity like North Beach Citizens can successfully combat one of society’s most enduring struggles.

It was appropriate to honor Mary Risley with North Beach Citizens’ Community Recognition Award. In 1987, Mary started Food Runners, initially to donate surplus food from her cooking classes to nearby shelters. Today, Food Runners delivers some 10 tons of food per week from over 200 donors to more than 450 food programs in the city via 250 volunteers.
Community Recognition Awards Dinner 2004
In 2004, it was fitting that the first recipients’ of North Beach Citizens Community Recognition Award were Mary Etta and Ed Moose. Residents of North Beach for 44 years, owners of restaurants in the neighborhood for 29 of those years, Mary Etta and Ed are role models for the rest of us with their seemingly endless energy and commitment to worthwhile causes like North Beach Citizens and the St. Anthony’s Foundation.
