SEEDS

SEEDS Program

Belonging to the Community
STEP 1:  After an initial trial period during which prospective clients demonstrate an interest in reclaiming their lives, the process of belonging to the NBC community, starts with the first in-take interview. During the in-take interview, clients provide NBC with basic personal information. Clients receive breakfast and lunch five days a week in addition to a personal voice mailbox, the use of NBC as their home mailing address, and access to bathroom facilities in order to maintain personal hygiene.

Case Manager Assignment

STEP 2:  Citizens begin to work with a Case Manager who assists them in linking into the appropriate city, state, and federal resources to move out of their current situation. The development of ownership and pride in their “Citizenship” starts by participating in the daily functions of the office, assisting with facility upkeep, volunteering, and receiving support within the NBC facility.

Re-Engagement with the Community
STEP 3: As a Citizen progresses through his or her individual action plan, the next steps, if the client is physically and mentally able, are job training, resume development, full or part-time employment, and adult education classes.  If a client is deemed physically or mentally disabled, the next steps are securing benefits, such as social security disability insurance or supplemental security income, and securing housing.

Employment and Community Service
STEP 4: The transition to self-sufficiency is the final step; it involves working part-time or volunteering on community events and doing outreach work with organizations and local businesses in North Beach and San Francisco. Citizens also have the opportunity to become involved in NBC-sponsored work projects such as the Street Beautification Project which has been funded in the past by local merchants, the Community Challenge Grant, and community groups.
