Who we are…

North Beach Citizens was started by a group of residents and merchants in North Beach, San Francisco’s traditionally Italian neighborhood, who began meeting to discuss the rise homeless in North Beach. In the spring of 2000, this group of concerned North Beachers became NBC’s first Board of Directors and filed for 501(c)3 non-profit status.

How we evolved…

After surveying the homeless residents of North Beach and compiling the information into a database for tracking purposes, the Board recognized the need for a resource center to provide basic services to North Beach’s homeless. The Board envisioned this resource center as a base from which the homeless residents of North Beach could rebuild their lives and reconnect with their community. The Board saw a staff of advocates who could address the individual needs of those homeless residents interested in reclaiming their lives manning this resource center.

Over the course of a year, 720 Columbus Avenue was rented and renovated. In January, 2001, North Beach Citizens opened. In one month, with a staff of only volunteers, North Beach Citizens was operating at full capacity, enrolling and working with 50 homeless residents.

What we offer…

North Beach Citizens has a unique approach to delivering support and services to the homeless. Based on the concept of earned trust, NBC forms relationships with its clients over time. These relationships allow NBC to increase the level of and the type of support offered according to each client’s need. The concept of earned trust is the foundation of NBC’s support ideology and has led to the development of NBC’s SEEDS program.
